This past semester, I had the privilege of working with the talented students at Rider University to create a piece that explores how I see music — and how our bodies shift, react, and transform as the sound and vibe evolve. they just love keeping me on my toes…

There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience at dress rehearsal but for different reasons. One, of course, because they were breathtaking. Their passion for dance and performing was obvious, and it left you feeling all types of emotions. But for me, personally, I found myself sobbing not just because they were beautiful, but because I was so, so damn proud of them. For this class specifically, we had our ups and downs throughout choreography season. We were stressed, unsure, and maybe even doubtful. It was a long dance that seemed never ending.

About halfway through this performance, I couldn’t cheer anymore. I couldn’t do anything but cry. I lost the ability to support them because I didn’t want to sob too loudly. The video ends before you see them reenter the stage with the LOUDEST applause I’ve heard at a dress rehearsal, and before I take the stage and they see me crying (which prompts them to cheer for themselves because they made me cry).

Dancers- watching this still gives me chills and tear up because you are everything and more. I hate that you keep me on my toes, but I guess who doesn’t love a good surprise?!

Old news but thought I would share: Back in July, I traveled back down to Montgomery, AL to work with my favorite studio in the south- Alabama Dance Theatre. This year, I taught classes throughout the week, such as ballet, pointe, contemporary, and Dance Science.

I also had the opportunity to create another piece for their Junior company to be performed at “Stars on the Riverfront”. Pictured are the beautiful dancers and a clip from rehearsal. Although I wasn’t able to attend the performance, please read below a review of the piece from Randy Foster:
“After intermission, the younger dancers (insert names) brought their wonderful presence back to the stage. Guest teacher and choreographer, Anna Fredeen created an exciting and vibrant piece for them. “Mundane Activities” is a fascinating contemporary dance that is an exploration of the tasks that take up our days. Fredeen’s work is energetic and deliberate in the way in which she abstracts the ‘activities’ and asks the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the meaning of the constantly churning movement. It is totally admirable that this piece was created and learned in one week! Bravo to choreographer and these young dancers”.

This year I choreographed 25 dances and out of all of them, this one will forever be my personal favorite and have a special place in my heart. Not only did I challenge myself choreographically to add various elements and play with texture and tempo, but these dancers.. man oh man. I’ll be losing 7 of them to college and I wanted to give them, and the rest of the dance family, a dance that allows them to just embrace their love for each other. When reading about this song, the artist said that this is an epic love song about loving someone so much that you’ll do anything with them, even if it’s all imaginary and impossible.. like chasing cars in your head. I knew the ending of the dance before I knew anything else; give them one last chance to just be with each other. The love these dancers have for each other and dance inspires me everyday. Thank you dancers for making me cry every time I watch this 🤍

This past week I was in Alabama working with Alabama Dance Theatre and their Junior Company, setting a contemporary modern piece. This process was collaborative in many ways, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of dancers to work with in such a short amount of time. This piece is about exploring your surroundings and stepping outside of your comfort zone, which these dancers definitely embodied. Thank you @alabamadancetheatre for having me this week and having me teach at your Community Day! It’s amazing to see kids come in and take classes that may have never stepped foot in a studio before.
And thank you @regionaldance for awarding me this opportunity to work with this studio this week; I am forever grateful! (The full piece will premier spring 2023)

I have a couple exciting things happening this summer, and one of them is that I will be teaching at Princeton Ballet School’s Summer Intensive! I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to teaching modern/contemporary this summer!

I recently graduated from Rider University magna cum laude with a B.A. in Dance Science and minor in Psychology. I am the first to graduate with this degree!

I shared my senior research capstone “The Effect of Ballet on Measures of Athletic Performance” at the New Jersey American College of Sports Medicine conference. I then later shared it with my fellow Rider Students at ISCAP. We are currently finishing the paper for submission to multiple journals in hopes it can become published.

I premiered my senior choreography capstone piece titled “Mvemnt” featuring Koy Withers and Kaniah Browne. To see whole the piece, click on the link in my bio! Words cannot express my love for this piece and my dancers.
